What to Do When a Toilet Overflows
Stop the water first
- Do not keep flushing.
- Turn the supply valve at the wall clockwise if you can reach it.
- If that valve will not close, shut the main water valve for the house.
- Keep kids and pets away. Avoid electrical outlets near standing water.

Fixture clog vs sewer backup
One toilet that overflows after a clog is often a fixture or nearby branch-line issue. If the shower or tub also rises when you flush, or other drains gurgle and back up, treat it as a main-line or sewer problem.
