Storm Plumbing Prep in Virginia Beach

What this page is for

Coastal storms and heavy rain put extra load on drains, laterals, and basement pumps. This is a prep list, not a flood-insurance guide and not a claim that we handle city infrastructure.

Before the rain

  • Clear leaves and debris from yard drains and the area around outdoor cleanouts, only if it is safe
  • If you have a sump pump, test that it runs and that the discharge path is open. See sump pump services
  • Know where the main water shutoff is: shutoff steps
  • Move valuables off basement floors if you already take on water in storms

During a backup or flood

Sewage in the home is a private plumbing emergency until proven otherwise. Limit contact and call. Street flooding from a main or hydrant belongs to Virginia Beach Public Utilities. Sort that distinction here: city vs private.

Do not run a shop-vac on sewage. Do not use electrical devices in standing water.
