What “running” usually means
Water keeps entering the bowl or you hear the tank refill when nobody flushed. That wastes water and can raise the bill even when the bathroom looks fine.
Common causes
- Flapper that does not seal
- Fill valve that never shuts off
- Chain too tight or tangled
- Water level set too high and spilling into the overflow tube

Safe checks at home
Shut the supply valve behind the toilet if you can reach it. That stops the waste while you wait. Dropping a dye tablet or a few drops of food coloring in the tank can show a silent flapper leak if color appears in the bowl without flushing. Do not force a stuck valve or take the tank apart if you are unsure.
When it is urgent
